The decision was made at the recent meeting of executive directors of the association of English-language newspapers — The Korea Times, The Korea Herald and The Korea JoongAng Daily — as well as The Aju Daily, the Chinese edition of The Aju Business Daily.

Choi will serve as the eighth chairperson of the association until the end of 2025, after his predecessor and the seventh chairperson, Korea Times President-Publisher Oh Young-jin.

The association was established in July 2015 and has since been carrying out joint research and projects to boost the development of foreign-language newspapers published in Korea.

Choi was previously a two-term mayor of Namwon, North Jeolla Province. He also served as CEO of Woolim Holdings.

He was appointed CEO of Herald Media Group in April 2024 after serving as CEO of The Korea Herald in 2021.

He graduated from Kyung Hee University in political science and international relations.
