Sejong City to host commemorative event for King Sejong's 627th birthday

The government of Sejong City is hosting a special event on May 15 to commemorate the 627th birthday of King Sejong the Great, the fourth monarch of the 1392-1910 Joseon Dynasty who invented Hangeul, the Korean writing system.

The event aims to honor the Joseon monarch's legacy and contributions to Korean culture.

The city, which is named after the monarch, organized a diverse range of activities to mark the occasion, in collaboration with institutions such as the Korea University Sejong Korean Culture Center and the Sejong Culture and Tourism Foundation.

These activities include performances, exhibitions and activities designed to showcase King Sejong's achievements and promote appreciation for Korean culture.

Additionally, there will be eco-friendly initiatives such as decorating bags and creating bookmark calligraphy.

The main commemorative ceremony is scheduled to commence at 3 p.m., featuring readings of handwritten letters to King Sejong and artistic performances of Korean calligraphy.

"May 15 is the day when King Sejong, who created Hangeul and advanced our culture, was born," Sejong Mayor Choi Min-ho said. "As this event represents respect and love for our history and culture, it will be a meaningful time."

The city has been aiming to become a hub for Hangeul-related events and institutions. It is also cultivating an environment steeped in the Korean language and giving names in pure Korean to villages, roads, bridges and schools.
