The state weather agency issued a heat advisory for Gwangju on Wednesday as unseasonal hot air held sway over the Korean Peninsula.
The advisory is issued to areas when their daytime high surpasses 33 degrees Celsius for two consecutive days. Gwangju's Wednesday daytime high was 33.1 degrees.
The advisory's date was the earliest since 2008 when the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) introduced it. The previous record was June 1, 2008.
The unusual hot weather will continue through the weekend, KMA officials said.
