40% of part-timers sexually harassed at work: survey

More than 40 percent of people with part-time jobs have been sexually harassed at work, a survey released on Monday shows.

Job search portal Alba.co.kr surveyed 2,100 part timers nationwide, with 41.8 percent of respondents saying they had been sexually harassed at work.

Of the victims, 87.1 percent were female and 12.9 percent male.

By age, 72.4 percent were in their 20s, 15.3 percent were teenagers and 9.7 percent were in their 30s.

A total of 30.8 percent said they heard comments about their appearance, 28.6 percent heard unpleasant sexual remarks, 26.7 percent experienced physical contact and 6 percent said they were forced to serve drinks.

Female part-timers said they were harassed by male employers (38.7 percent) and customers (37.4 percent), 13.3 percent by male co-workers and 6 percent by female employers.

Male part-timers said 23.3 percent of female customers placed them in an uncomfortable sexual situation, 20.2 percent of female employers did the same as did 18.4 percent of male employers and 14.1 percent of male customers.

More than 65 percent of those questioned said they just “cope with” the situation while only 1.4 percent said they filed complaints with relevant government departments.
