Media and communication professor Kim Ho-sung has been appointed president of Sungshin Women’s University in Seoul.
Sungshin’s board of directors confirmed Kim’s appointment last Friday and presented a certificate of appointment the same day.
The position has been vacant since mid-June after Shim Hwa-jin, stepped down following her conviction for embezzlement.
The tenure is four years, but Kim said he did not intend to serve the full term.
“After an agreement about a direct election system is approved by the board, I will return to my office.”
He expressed regret at the board’s refusal to choose a president through a direct election open to professors, students and graduates.
“I will try to clean up a stack of corruption and bad practices, and establish a democratic decision-making system,” Kim said.
“We urgently need unity and cooperation. I will do my best to listen to all members and take suggestions into consideration.”
