Canines saved from Korea's 'dog meat festival'

Nearly 150 dogs that faced slaughter to be served as “stamina boosting” meals in South Korea have been rescued and sent to shelters in the United States.

Human Society International (HSI), an international animal protection group, carried out the project last weekend.

The group rescued the dogs from a farm in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province, which faced closure for business reasons. If the group had not worked properly, the dogs could have been sold to dog meat retailers.

HSI reportedly had the dogs quarantined, examined for medical issues and vaccinated.

The dogs are now at a shelter in Wisconsin. The Humane Animal Welfare Society in Waukesha County is reportedly working to find new homes for the animals.
