Heavy rain alerts have been issued in Seoul and other central regions of the Korean Peninsula as torrential downpours and thunderstorms pounded the regions Sunday morning.
Several highways have been submerged and train services were partially disrupted. A popular perimeter highway was blocked at 9:20 a.m. as a nearby river reached a flood level.
No major property damage or casualties have been reported.
The peninsula is in the annual monsoon season which is forecast to continue through the middle of this week. Southern regions have already been slammed by days-long downpours that caused deadly landslides and flooding.
As of Sunday 10 a.m., Seoul, northern Gyeonggi Province and western Gangwon Province had about 50 mm of rain in just hours, with up to 100 mm expected throughout the day, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.
As of 9 a.m., Goyang had 99.5 mm of rain, Pocheon 91 mm, Kimhwa 89.0 mm, Tanhyeon 88 mm, Yangdo 80.5 mm, Gimpo 71.5 mm, and Dobong 62.5 mm, according to the agency.
