Senior editors from major newspapers in four member countries of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will gather at the 12th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity to discuss the future of ASEAN-Korea cooperation.
The Korea Times and Jeju Peace Institute will co-host the ASEAN Journalist Roundtable to mark the 50th anniversary of ASEAN on the sidelines of the Jeju Forum slated for May 31 to June 2.
The roundtable, which will be held at Samda Hall at the International Convention Center on May 31, consists of two parts — a keynote speech and a panel discussion.
First, Shin Yoon-hwan, chairman of the Korean Association of Southeast Asian Studies, will deliver a keynote speech on the future of ASEAN-Korea cooperation.
Then, four senior journalists from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore will discuss diverse issues, including ASEAN integration, the win-win relationship between ASEAN and Korea, and the role of media.
Among participants at the roundtable are The Straits Times associate editor Ravi Velloor from Singapore, The Philippine Star associate editor Doreen Yu, and The Star Online editor Philip Golingai from Malaysia.
Korea Times Asia Bureau Chief Kim Jae-kyoung will moderate the panel discussion.
With the official launch of the ASEAN Economic Community and rising popularity of hallyu or the Korean wave, the ASEAN region has emerged as a land of opportunity for Korea.
With a combined GDP of $2.6 trillion, the ASEAN economy is the seventh largest in the world and third largest in Asia. Its population is also the third largest in the world with 622 million people.
