The full scholarship offered by Duke University was one of the reasons Shim Bo-min chose the school. Shim is a PhD student attending the school of nursing. Her scholarship offers tuition and subsidies for five years.

Duke had been famous for programs such as its bachelor and master of science in nursing. The school, which introduced the PhD program last year is ambitiously drawing qualified nurses and Shim was selected as one of the first nursing doctoral students.

``I have seen many potential faculty who advised and guided me through the program. They want our success not only during the program but after graduation,’’ Shim said.

As the Duke president emphasized the importance of interactions among different departments, Shim was impressed by the support from faculty staff from other majors. ``I have been introduced to, and helped by physicians and numerous faculty members from other departments when my interests involved fields outside nursing. Collaboration is one of Duke's best assets,’’ she said. ``The firm connection among the school’s alumni is also another strength, as well as its lovely campus and a beautiful chapel.’’

Shim has experience in both Korea and the United States in a research based graduate level degree. She received a master's degree from Seoul National University. ``I guess the biggest difference is the diverse opportunity, both academically and socially. Studying in the U.S. has enable me to get into a much bigger network,’’ she said.

After graduation, Shim plans to continue research while pursuing a career in post doctoral studies. ``I wish to work internationally at an organization such as the World Health Organization because I am interested in global health issues.’’
