The National Assembly on Monday adopted the confirmation hearing report for the chairman nominee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), paving the way for the appointment of the top military officer.

The approval came after the parliamentary defense committee held a confirmation hearing for Air Force Gen. Jin Yong-sung last week.

The committee said it made a positive assessment of Jin's understanding of the security situation on the Korean Peninsula, preparations for the transfer of wartime operational command to Seoul from Washington and determination to restore confidence in the military following last year's botched martial law bid.

Jin was promoted to a four-star general and nominated as JCS chairman earlier this month, in the first sweeping reshuffle of top-brass military posts following former ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law imposition.

He previously served as the inaugural chief of the Strategic Command.
