A supporter of scandal-hit South Chungcheong Governor An Hee-jung was caught smashing a window of the governor’s official residence with a baseball bat, police said Tuesday.

Police said CCTV footage shows the supporter, 37, running to the residence wielding a baseball bat and smashing a window at 08:20 a.m. Security guards caught him. It is not known if the governor was there.

The alleged offender was found to be a member of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), to which Ah belongs. The man will be charged with sabotaging a public facility.

The incident came a day after An’s secretary claimed he had raped her four times since June. Police said the attacker had committed the crime in a fury over the governor’s alleged misconduct.

The governor admitted his offences and offered to resign on Tuesday. The DPK is holding an emergency meeting to oust him.

An, one of South Korea’s most prominent politicians, was widely viewed as a major presidential contender.
