The number of visitors of the Dokdo museum is expected to go over 90,000 two-and-a-half years after it opened, a state-run think tank, the Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF), said Wednesday.
The Dokdo Museum opened in September 2012 to improve the public’s understanding of the Dokdo islets.
The NAHF is offering the 90,000th visitor an opportunity to travel to both Ulleung and Dokdo.
The number of visitors reached 89,784 during the first week of this month, averaging about 40,000 visits per year, an unusually high number for a single-themed museum.
The museum is an educational site for the collection and the preservation of Dokdo-related materials, a scientific museum for experiencing the nature and history of Dokdo. It offers a textbook that presents information about Dokdo in a three-dimensional format. The materials presented in this exhibition are based on research conducted in Korea over the past 60 years.
The museum has also attracted nearly 2,000 foreign tourists from 67 nations worldwide, including various main news outlets such as NHK, CNN, BBC and FAZ.
