Seoul's vibrant nightlife scene gives way to a myriad of sub-niches teeming with life and passion for their community. Tunnel, a unique establishment tucked comfortably in the middle of Itaewon's Vietnam Street, is a beacon of resilience in the electronic music community. Set to celebrate its second anniversary, Tunnel, co-owned by Im Conan, Jo Won-geun and Jo Seung-geun, has become a true example of creativity and endurance amid challenging times.

Tunnel's story began two years ago in 2021 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted the founders to question whether their scene had ever faced such adversity before. Instead of waiting and hoping for the best, they embarked on a journey to create something extraordinary, driven by the belief that tough times could birth innovation. They decided to carve out a new space for themselves in the Itaewon community through their passion for music.

"We have built a strong lineup of resident DJs based on the genres we embrace, including electronica, indie dance, dark disco and mid-tempo techno,” Jo Seung-geun said. “If we were to compare Tunnel to a living being, each DJ has become an integral part of Tunnel's vital organs. The same holds true for our designers and staff members. We are continuously evolving."

Over the past two years, Tunnel has been a sanctuary for those who seek a unique and genuine nightlife experience. What stands out most to the owners is the unwavering support of their early patrons, who still frequent the venue today. Their loyalty a source of genuine happiness and pride for the owners.

Despite the joy of operating an integral piece of Itaewon's electronic scene, running Tunnel hasn't always been without its challenges. The owners recall one particularly difficult moment ― the Halloween crowd disaster in 2022. That incident tested their emotional strength and resolve but did not deter their commitment to the venue's vision. In fact, it gave way to a renewed sense of determination to provide something to their community because the people needed it.

Tunnel's second anniversary celebration is right around the corner, scheduled to run for four days from Sept. 14 to 17. The event promises to be a spectacular showcase of Tunnel's unique character, with renowned DJs who have been part of Tunnel's journey from the beginning in attendance. International artist AFFKT is set to perform. Also an exhibition by MAKI, the artist behind Tunnel's captivating artwork over the past two years, will be featured.
