InterNations to mark Mandela Day

Listen

Global networking group InterNations invites Korean members to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day at Lotteworld Mall in Seoul, July 16.

The day commemorates the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world, and was launched via a unanimous decision by the U.N. General Assembly on 18 July, 2009, his birthday.

South Africans remember Mandela by pledging 67 minutes of their life to social justice every July 18 as Nelson Mandela gave 67 years of his life for this cause.

“Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Each year … we look back on what has been done, and forward to what will be done,” the event organizer says on its official website.

“It is in your hands to make the world a better place,” said Mandela in 2008, calling on the younger generation to take up this task.

“Making every day a Mandela Day celebrates Madiba’s life and legacy in a sustainable way that will bring about enduring change.”

“Madiba" is Mandela’s clan name and is used as a sign of respect.

InterNations is an international community organization for people who live and work abroad, and offers global networking opportunities, local events and expat-relevant information.

Founded in 2007 by Malte Zeeck, Philipp von Plato and Christian Leifeld, InterNations is one of the largest global expat networks with more than 1.5 million members in 390 cities worldwide.

“At around 3,500 monthly events and activities, expats get to meet fellow internationals in their city, while forums and destination guides provide valuable tips and information. To ensure the quality of the network, InterNations membership is by approval only,” the organization says on its website.

The group will meet at Lotteworld Mall PF Chang's restaurant at 6:30 p.m.

Each attendee will pay for his or her own meal.

“Please bring a list that will be your 67 nuggets of wisdom you would add to the world more consciously once declared at this dinner,” said activity host Priscilla Thavanee Savathasen.
