V Lounge, a new live music venue in Haebangchon, central Seoul, is attracting a large number of expat musicians, artists and artisans with a series of nightly concerts and monthly markets.

Located in the basement of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Club, the premises have been renovated with a new stage, removing the pool table and installing a state-of-the-art sound system.

Having only opened three months ago, staff member Brian Andry aims to attract a more diverse crowd.

“The dynamics in the neighborhood are changing,” he told The Korea Times last Saturday. “We’re looking to a larger, more adventurous crowd.”

V Lounge is a mainstay of the regular HBC Club Night, run by HBC Fest organizers and featuring live musicians at selected venues throughout Haebangchon, Gyeongnidan and Itaewon.

They also offer the Foreign Culture and Craft Market on the last Sunday of every month.

The aim of the market is to expose guests and participants to music, food and goods crafted by artisans from different cultures and raise funds and awareness of local charities.

January’s market was held last Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with V Lounge providing New Orleans-style red beans and rice.

Entertainment was provided by Korean-American singer/songwriter Mimi Roh.

“It was a day where people were so eager to share, and at the same time, so receptive to sharing,” said Roh in an interview.

“It was a real pleasure to play my music for such creative individuals.”

V Lounge is located halfway up the main street of Haebanchon on the left at basement level. To get there leave Noksapyeong Station exit 2 and head left at the kimchi pots.
