A “Bras for a Cause” auction event will be held to raise money for the Korea Breast Cancer Foundation (KBCF) at Bull & Barrel in Itaewon on Saturday at 8 p.m.
The foundation is Korea’s first nonprofit organization that fights breast cancer and strives to improve the quality of lives of breast cancer sufferers.
Decorated bras, sent from as far afield as New Zealand, adorned with flowers, birds, beads, butterflies and even artificial grass will be modeled for auction.
“Bras for a Cause Seoul is entering its fourth year, having raised more than 25 million won for the KBCF so far,” the auction organizer said in a press release.
“If detected and treated in its early stages, over 90 percent of breast cancer cases can be cured,” KBCF President Noh Dong-young said.
“That is why we are very pleased with the donations raised at the Bras for a Cause events. This will help fund even more activities such as KBCF’s Pink Tours, which aim to raise awareness among women about the importance of self-examinations, as well as treatment for breast cancer sufferers with low incomes,” Noh added.
“I organize this event because there are so many women who suffer from breast cancer,” said event organizer Abigail Flores, a 42-year-old from California who has been teaching English in Korea for 13 years.
Founded in 2000, the KBCF takes a positive approach to women and breast cancer ― supporting low-income sufferers that need surgery, organizing preventative checkups and carrying out research on breast-related diseases.
Last year, the KBCF provided over 850 free mammograms, gave financial aid to 107 low-income women and sponsored a “Pink Tour” to promote breast cancer awareness where lectures are given by breast cancer survivors trained at Seoul National University.
A 10,000 won entry fee comes with a pink breast cancer support ribbon and a raffle ticket. As well as auctions and raffles of gift certificates and other prizes, entertainment will be provided by the White Lies Burlesque Review, Belly Dancing from Navah and Foxy Ladies.
