Zen grandmaster Kiew to lecture in Korea

Listen

By John Redmond

Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit of Shaolin Wahnam will visit Korea on a lecture tour from Aug. 23 to Aug. 26.

Grandmaster Wong is a master of the Shaolin teachings which are Zen, Shaolin kung fu and Shaolin chi kung. He is also a master of Wudang-style tai chi boxing.

He has lineage back to Bodhidharma himself through Ven. Jiang Nan of the Southern Shaolin Temple in China.

In Korea, he will lecture on Zen and chi kung and also teach four chi kung courses. Chi kung is the art of energy and might be described as Chinese yoga. It’s movements are simple and easy to perform synchronized with breathing in a meditative state practiced for good health, vitality, mental freshness, internal force whether you are a martial artist or not, and spiritual cultivation.

The "High-Level Chi Kung for Health, Vitality, Longevity, Peak Performance and Spiritual Joys" lecture will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Colomban Fathers Hall at Songshin University on Aug. 23.

Grandmaster Wong will transmit some chi to members of the audience so that they can feel their chi. If this sounds too far-fetched or too good to be true, people should be reminded that this is high-level chi kung from the Shaolin Temple where these arts are rooted.

Colomban Fathers Hall is near Songshin University subway line number 4 exit 4. From exit 4, take a sharp right then veer left at the Family Mart. The road will curve around to the right briefly. As soon as you come around the corner you will see the Colomban House's big gates ahead on the right covered by a traditional Korean style roof.

The lecture “How to Practice Zen to Enrich One’s Daily Life Irrespective of Religion” will take place at the Bubryunsah Temple on Aug. 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Wong will lecture on Zen and also lead a guided meditation, leading the audience into a Zen state of mind, which is non-religious, to experience mental freshness and clarity.

Bubryunsah Temple is near Anguk Station. From exit 1 (on the opposite side of the road you will see a large inkbrush sculpture) go straight, cross the road at the lights and keep going straight. On your immediate right will be a high traditional-style stone wall. Follow that for about 200 meters until the junction. In the middle of the crossroads is a traditional stone structure with a traditional roof. Take a sharp right and Bupryunsah is on the right.

The final Shaolin chi kung courses will be held at the Dabo Building in Mapo.

“Generating Energy Flow” will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and “Massaging Internal Organs” from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 and “Cosmic Shower” from 8 a.m. to noon and “Cosmic Breathing” 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 26

To get to the Dabo Building leave Mapo Station via exit 4 and walk straight for about 100 meters. The Dabo Building is on the left.
