Celebrating two years of successful subculture in contrast with the surrounding ultra, upscale Cheongdam sybarites, Platoon Kunsthalle invites everyone on Friday April 15 to join an evening of charity auctioning and participate in the premiere “mook-jji-bba” competition. The event will also have a delicious barbecue and special DJs.

In April 2009, Platoon Kunsthalle was built using 28 ISO cargo containers. They were deftly stacked to create nearly 3000 square feet of creative, energetic space in a unique four-storey building and the subculture playground was born.

A spawn of German initiative with headquarters in Berlin, this flexible architecture was set up as an incubator ― nurturing underground artists by offering them studio residencies as well as supporting diverse cultural and communication projects.

During the past 2 years, diverse events have taken place within the corrugated container walls as more than 80 young upcoming artists have exhibited in the showcases on the first floor. Over 100 cultural events ranging from a tattoo convention, dj seminars, a cut-and paste-competition to the monthly night flea market have brought all sorts of artists and inspiration together.

So don’t be late on Friday as the bidding will start at 50,000 won for 20 exceptional artworks contributed by the showcase and studio artists and select Platoon friends at 8:30 pm.

The artwork for auction will go on display starting today or can be viewed on the website. One such work is by a female Korean street artist who goes by the name “junkhouse” and features distorted figures in an animated and bright way. Another is a stencil art piece by street artist known as VS titled “Skill of Killing for Survival” depicting an unidentified male figure that feels threatened, emphasized by the red background.

Also internationally-known photographers Kim Jung-man and Kim Do-kyun will each be donating impressive pieces.

All proceeds of the auction will be donated to Global Giving, an international charity organization fostering education, health, women and children alongside many other causes.

Mook-jji-bba, commonly called “rock, paper, scissors” in English, is a popular Korean game played using your hands and fingers. But mook-jji-bba goes a few steps beyond. People working closely with Platoon Kunsthalle such as t-artist, Soo, initiated the competition with the aim to spread a new concept of the game throughout Korea and abroad.

Party DJs Akiyuki Tanno, Hurricane B, and Bedal Boy will be on hand to spin the beats.

Entry is free.
