A total of 25 artists from seven countries are taking part in a two-part exhibition under way at Gallery Golmok in Haebangchon through April 24.

Under the theme “Before the Dawn of Language,” the International Artists Community (IAC) will present an ambitious and exciting exhibition both in diversity of artists and in theme.

The theme in particular challenges artists ― including painters, photographers, sculptors, installation artists, performance artists and musicians ― to go back to a time when art was the primary mode of communication for the emerging human species.

“In today’s world of mass instant communication of the sublimely trivial, this exhibition’s intention is to reintroduce its audience to art as symbol. Visitors to the exhibition will experience images, sounds and performances that dissolve barriers and open gateways to pure communication as it was ‘Before the Dawn of Language,’” a press release states.

The first exhibition, which opened on March 5, will showcase the work of 15 painters, mixed-media artists and photographers from such countries as the United States, Italy, Canada, Lebanon and Korea. It will run through March 27.

The second exhibition, which will open on April 2, will feature 10 installation, video, performance artists, sculptors and musicians from the United States and Korea. The exhibit, which will run through April 24.

The International Artists Community (IAC) came into being in November 2009. It is made up of artists mainly living in Korea (both Korean and foreigners), who are interested in coming together to share ideas and work creatively together despite differences in language and culture.

The group includes both emerging artists as well as experienced internationally recognized artists. The IAC is based in Seoul and actively seeks contact and collaboration with other like-minded groups within the city, the Korean peninsula and internationally.

Gallery Golmok is a large new gallery located a few minutes walk from Noksapyeong Station, Line 6, exit 3.

The gallery opening times are from 10:30 a.m. till 10 p.m.
