Seoul Players to stage Wintertime

Listen

By John Redmond

Seoul Players will once again present its winter main stage production, “Wintertime,” written by Charles Mee at Roofers in Itaewon starting Nov. 26.

Set around the New Year, this romantic comedy gives the audience a chance to meet Ariel and Jonathan, along with Maria, and a slew of other fantastically funny characters that discuss love, its expectations and its complications.

The cast is made up of people from various nationalities.

“We have a cast of 10 performers who are from South Africa, the U.K., U.S. and Canada. From what I saw at the rehearsal, it'll be a fun play for the holidays,” said long-time Soul Players participant Pamela Munoz.

Charles L. Mee is an American playwright, historian and author known for his collage-like style of playwriting that utilizes radical reconstructions of found texts. Mee was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1938. He led a typical middle-class, Midwestern boyhood until he contracted polio at the age of fourteen. His memoir “A Nearly Normal Life” (1999) tells how that event informed the rest of his life.

Seoul Players is an English-speaking community theater company based in Seoul. It was formed in late 2001 as a non-profit organization by Roman Zolnierczyk, an Australian business executive and keen thespian. The group of (mostly) ex-pats delights in bringing English-language theater to audiences here in Seoul.

Seoul Players brings talented people together, some with a lot of theatre background, and some with none. All those involved with the Seoul Players volunteer their time for the love of theater.

“With many local Koreans also attending our performances, we also hope to broaden awareness in Korea of foreign theater and offer Korean students an English learning experience,” (whose quote?)

The Players’ first production was staged in June 2002 during the Korea / Japan World Cup. Since then the company has staged approximately two full-scale productions every year.

Wintertime begins Nov. 26 and will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 12 at Roofers in Itaewon.

The cost is 10,000 won.

Due to some of the content of the show, the producers recommend a viewing age of 15 years and older. There will be some nudity during the performance.

To get to Roofers, leave Itaewon Station (line 6) via exit 3. Walk up the street and turn right at the kebab restaurant. Roofers is halfway up the street, second floor on the right, opposite the Foreign Food Mart.
