Hanyang University pioneers new internationalization model, providing end-to-end support for int'l students

Hanyang University is stepping up internationalization efforts under its “Boundless, Passionate and Uncharted” vision.

The university’s Office of International Admissions said the university has established a new model of internationalization that is boundless, driven by passion and growth, venturing into uncharted territory.

The office added that the university has also set a goal of fostering shared growth in the internationalization of Korean higher education by pioneering this new model among Korean universities.

“The new internationalization model goes beyond simply recruiting international students,” a university official said. “We provide end-to-end support spanning admissions, employment, entrepreneurship and settlement in Korea.”

He noted that the university regards breaking down the boundaries of nationality, culture, roles and goals as the foundational principle of internationalization.

Hanyang University has also created an environment in which approximately 20,000 international students learn and grow together each year.

Viewing international students not simply as “customers” but as “future talent,” the university is building a comprehensive support system that extends from admissions to employment, entrepreneurship and settlement in Korea.

To realize this vision, the university has shifted the focus of its internationalization strategy from simply recruiting international students to supporting their long-term settlement in Korea.

It has created the HY All-Care System, transforming fragmented, program-based support into an integrated system to help each international student throughout their entire journey.

Under the system, the university follows a five-step road map that includes job information sessions, one-on-one counseling, career camps, job fairs and post-employment support.

In addition, the university has established a four-stage virtuous cycle encompassing international student recruitment, student support and management, career support and talent retention and settlement.

Through this integrated cycle, the university brings international student recruitment and support — traditionally handled as separate processes — into a single end-to-end system.

For example, university officials made recruitment trips to seven countries, including China, Vietnam, India, Mongolia, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to attract international students.

For student support and management, the university ran cultural adaptation and psychological counseling programs attended by 1,402 international students.

For career support, the university offered 15 programs to help international students find jobs.

The system is also closely integrated with the international admissions office’s performance management framework.

The office uses its balanced scorecard (BSC) not simply as an evaluation tool but as a platform for strategic implementation, directly linking it to the university’s mid- to long-term development plan and its goal of strengthening global competitiveness.

Through biweekly full-team meetings and weekly subteam meetings, the office continuously monitors progress and identifies links among performance indicators, creating synergies across its initiatives.

As a result, all four of the office’s key performance indicators (KPI) met their targets in 2025.

In particular, the indicator for strengthening students’ career competencies achieved 200 percent of its target, while the indicator for activities aligned with the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) reached 125 percent of its target, substantially outperforming expectations.

These efforts have also translated into tangible outcomes for students. Some international students have secured positions at leading companies in Korea and abroad with the help of the university’s support programs.

Students who secured employment said the university’s career support was one of the most helpful resources throughout their job-search and preparation process.

Hanyang University attributes its rapid growth in internationalization to its global network of 731 partner universities overseas and 15,000 international alumni, as well as its AI-based systems implemented throughout the entire international student recruitment and support process.

The university said it will continue nurturing talented students equipped with expertise in their fields of study, Korean-language proficiency, strong character and the ability to adapt to Korean society, while further strengthening its internationalization framework.
