The state arms procurement agency said Wednesday it has signed a preliminary agreement to improve testing of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) amid growing use of such combat systems in future maritime warfare.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration inked the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Agency for Defense Development and the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology to develop objective testing capabilities for unmanned systems.
Under the agreement, the agencies agreed to share equipment needed for tests and evaluations of USVs, conduct joint research to set up criteria for the assessments, and provide training to relevant staff.
Unmanned maritime systems have proven to be an effective means in recent warfare, with growing calls to integrate private-sector technology with military capabilities.
