Army chief to visit Poland, Romania for talks on arms industry cooperation

Korea's top Army officer will visit Poland and Romania this week to discuss ways to expand bilateral arms industry cooperation, his office said Tuesday.

Gen. Park An-su embarked on the nine-day trip earlier in the day to first visit Poland for talks with Wieslaw Kukula, chief of the Polish General Staff, and other top military officials, according to the Army.

The visit was aimed at discussing follow-up support measures for Korean weapons systems recently purchased by Warsaw.

In 2022, Poland signed major deals with Korean defense companies to buy various weapons systems, including K2 tanks, K9 self-propelled howitzers and Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers.

An will then head to Romania on Saturday for talks with top military officials to discuss cooperation in the country's efforts to modernize its military, the Army said.

The trip comes after Korea's Hanwha Aerospace clinched a 1.38 trillion-won deal ($1.02 billion) in July to supply Romania with 54 K9s and 36 K10 armored ammunition resupply vehicles. (Yonhap)
