The Air Force has appointed three female fighter pilots as directors of operations, the second-highest position in a fighter squadron. It marks the first time in Air Force history of women being assigned to such a position.
The three are Maj. Park Ji-yeon of the 202 Fighter Squadron under the 16th Fighter Wing, Maj. Park Ji-won of the 203 Fighter Squadron under the 8th Fighter Wing and Maj. Ha Jung-mi of the 123 Fighter Squadron under the 20th Fighter Wing.
The role of the director of operations is to supervise the squadron’s operational missions as well as training and educating junior pilots.
The Air Force said the three were appointed to the positions after meeting the most rigorous requirements and satisfying all qualifications.
Maj. Park Ji-yeon and Maj. Park Ji-won were the first female cadets who were allowed to enter the Air Force Academy in 1997. They became the first female fighter pilots in 2002 and now fly FA-50 light attack jets.
Maj. Ha entered the academy in 1998 and became the first female pilot flying KF-16 jets in 2007.
“As director of operations, I will do my best to assist the squadron commander and encourage the pilots so they can demonstrate optimal combat capability,” Maj. Park Ji-yeon said. “I will also act as a bridge between the commander and the fighters for better communication.”
Maj. Park Ji-won said, “I have great pride flying the FA-50 and defending the nation’s airspace. As I assume this heavy responsibility, I will give my every effort to complete my duties.”
For her part, Maj. Ha said she is also proud of holding a crucial role in the Air Force.
The Air Force noted that their appointment represents the growing role of female aviators and officers in the nation.
