About 100 rounds of blank bullets made in the United States were found inside a recycling bin in this northeastern city Wednesday and an investigation is under way to look into the case, military police said.

An apartment watchman discovered 92 rounds of blank bullets inside a recycling bin at an apartment complex in Euijeongbu, just north of Seoul, at around 6:30 a.m. and reported it to police, according to local police.

Euijeongbu is home to the U.S. Army's 2nd Infantry Division's Camp Red Cloud.

Military police said they have taken the bullets from police to figure out how and why the bullets were found in the residential area.

Officials said the 5.56 mm bullets were produced in 1999 in the U.S. for M-16 rifles, saying the same kind of ammunition is used for American forces training.

The Koreas remain technically at war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice. About 28,500 U.S. soldiers are stationed here to deter against the North Korean threat. (Yonhap)
