2 airmen killed in spy jet crash

Two pilots of an RF-4C surveillance aircraft were killed Friday, after the 40-year-old plane crashed into a mountain near Imsil, North Jeolla Province, during a routine training mission, the Air Force said Friday.

The body of one pilot and the wreckage of the aircraft were found near the site, a spokesman for the Air Force said.

“A search-and-rescue team found the body of one pilot and the aircraft wreckage on the mountain,” the spokesman told reporters. “It is presumed that the copilot was killed in the jet crash.”

The spy plane took off from an air base in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, at 11:50 a.m. and disappeared from radar around 12:30 p.m., it said.

Search-and-rescue helicopters were dispatched to the area, while an investigation team led by Vice Air Force Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Kim Yoong-hong was set up, according to the statement.

South Korea introduced RF-4C planes, modified from the F-4 Phantom II of the U.S. Air Force, in the early 1990s.

Equipped with surveillance cameras and radar systems, the aircraft fly missions near the inter-Korean border to gather information on North Korea, and carry out terrain and ground mapping.

The last incident involving an RF-4C occurred in April 2008. At that time, the two pilots ejected from the aircraft.

The jet crash came on the heels of a Navy patrol ship’s deadly collision with a fishing boat in waters off the southern Jeju Island, amid the tight security posture during the G20 Seoul Summit.

On Thursday, a 150-ton Chamsuri-class ship collided with a fishing boat in waters of Jeju, leaving one seaman dead and two others missing.

공군 정찰기 추락으로 조종사 2명 사망

12일 오전 11시50분께 전북 임실에서 공군 RF-4C 정찰기 1대가 추락했다.

2명의 조종사 중 한명의 시신과 40년 된 정찰기 잔해들이 현장 인근에서 발견됐다고 공군이 밝혔다.

정찰기는 형체를 알아볼 수 없을 정도로 산산조각이 났고, 주변에서는 기름냄새가 코를 찔렀다.

현장에는 외부인의 출입이 통제된 가운데 탐색구조 헬기와 탐색구조 요원이 급파돼 수색작업을 벌이고 있었다.

사고 지점은 운암면 옥정호 근처의 청운마을에서 1.5km가량 떨어진 야산의 7부 능선.

사고 직후 현장을 찾은 이 마을 주민들에 따르면 사고 지점에는 너비 20m, 최고 깊이 4m가량의 큰 웅덩이가 생겼다.

그리고 정찰기의 잔해가 사방 100m까지 흩어진 가운데 가장 큰 파편이 지름 1m 안팎일 정도로 산산조각이 나 있었다.

주민 이모(40)씨는 "마을 회의를 하고 있는데 '쿵' 하는 소리가 들려 현장으로 달려갔다"며 "파편으로만 봐서는 추락한 비행체가 정찰기인지를 전혀 알아볼 수 없을 정도였다"고 당시 상황을 전했다.

현장에는 또 불에 그슬린 낙하산이 눈에 띄었고, 매캐한 연기 냄새와 기름 냄새가 진동하고 있었다.

본체가 추락한 것으로 추정되는 지점에서 30m가량 떨어진 능선의 뒤쪽에서는 주민들이 현장에 도착한 이후에도 서너 차례 작은 폭발이 있었다고 한다.

현장에서는 뒤늦게 사고 조종사의 시신 1구가 수습됐으나 신원을 알아보기 어려울 정도로 심하게 훼손된 상태인 것으로 알려졌다.

이를 종합할 때 정찰기는 손 쓸 틈 없이 곤두박질치듯 추락했을 것이라는 추정이 나오고 있다.

경찰 관계자는 "웅덩이의 크기나 잔해의 상태 등을 보면 정찰기가 수직에 가깝게 떨어지며 강하게 지면을 충격한 것 같다"고 말했다.

이 사고기는 공군 정찰비행전대 소속으로 이날 오전 11시50분께 저고도 정찰훈련 임무를 위해 수원기지를 이륙했다.
