KABUL _ Two prominent members of the Afghan Wolesi Jirga, or the Lower House of Parliament, Friday expressed their strong disapproval of Taliban militants for kidnapping Korean women and asked for their immediate release.
The two were female parliamentarian Shukria Barakzai and male member Abdul Rahman Oghli.
Delivering her speech on the second day of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Peace Jirga, Barakzai said the kidnapping of women was against the tradition of the Pashtuns.
She urged the 700 delegates attending the Jirga to work for the release of the Korean hostages in their individual capacities as well as jointly. Barakzai said the act was condemnable as never in the history of Pashtuns have women been abducted.
Another parliamentarian, Abdul Rahman Oghli also slammed the Taliban for the kidnapping and keeping of women hostages in illegal captivity. He said a Pashtun had never committed such an act in history. He said the act had earned shame on Afghans and their society all over the world.
The four-day gathering was launched on Thursday with the aim to bring peace to Afghanistan and Pakistan and put an end to terrorism, kidnappings and violence.
On the first day, the Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other speakers had also condemned the Taliban and had noted that their action was against the culture and traditions of Pashtuns.
