A senior defense official will attend a regional conference on military affairs to be held in Manila, the Philippines, Wednesday on the sidelines of the 14th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), the Ministry of National Defense said Tuesday.
Army Brig. Gen. Kim Byoung-gi, deputy chief of the ministry’s international cooperation bureau, will discuss ways of promoting military cooperation with his 26 other foreign counterparts, it said in a press release.
Kim will make a presentation on South Korea’s successful peacekeeping operations overseas such as in Iraq and Afghanistan, it said. South Korea keeps 1,200 troops in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil and 210 non-combatant soldiers in Afghanistan for a humanitarian and reconstruction mission.
The meeting will take place a day before the opening of the ARF, Asia’s largest security forum where foreign ministers in the region gather to discuss measures to strengthen regional cooperation in fighting terrorism and disasters as well as stopping nuclear proliferation.
