Popular U.S. rock musician Richard Marx has lashed out at Korean Air for its “ill-equipped” response to an unruly passenger on a plane he was aboard.
He said Korea’s flagship airline should be “sanctioned” because crew members were unable to subdue a “psycho” without the help of passengers.
The musician revealed the in-flight trouble on KE480 and the alleged ineptitude of crew members on Tuesday through a Facebook posting and six attached photos.
Calling the crew “ill equipped,” Marx posted pictures and video of the disturbance on the flight from Hanoi, Vietnam, to Incheon, South Korea.
“All the female crew were clueless and not trained as to how to restrain the psycho … and was only subdued when I and a couple of other male passengers intervened,” Marx posted. “Korean Air should be sanctioned for not knowing how to handle a situation like this without passenger interference.”
He said the chaotic event continued for four hours and the situation peaked when one of the stewardesses had to point a Taser at the passenger to restrain him.
“This went on for FOUR (hours),” wrote Daisy Fuentes, Marx’s wife. “I feel horrible for the abuse the staff had to endure but no one was prepared for this. They never fully got control of him.”
The passenger was restrained during the flight but broke free and resumed his attack because the restraints were not securely fastened, Marx said.
Korean Air said there was nothing wrong with the crew members’ response.
“We played by the rule,” the company said. “According to the response protocol, Korean Air's flight attendants have subdued the unruly passenger and tied him up with ropes. The passenger was turned over to the police upon arrival at Incheon Airport.”
