Pro-Park lawmakers ignore public outcry, play golf

Lawmakers loyal to embattled President Park Geun-hye have come under fire for playing golf while protesters stormed central Seoul late last month calling for Park’s resignation.

According to Yonhap News Agency, four lawmakers of the ruling Saenuri Party, categorized as Park supporters, played golf at a country club in Danyang, North Chungcheong Province, on Oct. 29. On the same day, about 20,000 citizens enraged by the Choi Soon-sil scandal took to the streets of central Seoul, calling for Park’s resignation and a thorough investigation of the case.

The lawmakers were Rep. Lee Hun-seung, Kwon Suk-chang, Moon Jin-kook and Kim Sun-rae. Rep. Hong Mun-jong reportedly joined a dinner held after the game.

Critics say this shows the lawmakers are “nonchalant” to the growing political scandal that has crippled President Park’s leadership and sent her approval rating to a record low.

The controversial golf game was organized by Kwon, who is facing trial after being charged in June this year over allegations he received illegal political funds from the construction industry in April and May 2015. Kwon is believed to have booked the game using a fake name to avoid possible criticism.

“I couldn’t see their real names on the reservation list,” said a golf club official. “I think they used nicknames just like other golfers to avoid others’ attention.”

Kwon also said: “A third person made a reservation for us,” adding the participants shared the green fee. “Each of us paid for ourselves,” he said. “It shouldn’t be a problem.”

Rep. Hong became a target of public criticism in July 2006 for playing golf with other party members when torrential rain severely damaged parts of Gangwon Province.
