Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) will hold an outdoor sports event for migrant workers staying here this Sunday, it said Tuesday.

According to the SMG, the annual event will begin at 10 a.m. and end of 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Jamsil Subsidiary Stadium in Songpa, southeastern Seoul.

The event, scheduled a week before Chuseok, Korea’s biggest national holiday, was organized to provide the workers an opportunity to strengthen their rapport and to help maintain a positive spirit and sense of belonging in a foreign country, the SMG said.

More than 900 workers expected to participate in the outdoor event have applied through six Global Migrant Centers in Seoul including Seongdong, Eunpyeong, Geumcheon, Gangdong, Seongbuk and Yangcheon.

Participants from each center will compete in outdoor team sports including darts and limbo, as well as traditional Korean folk games, such as yunnori and tug-of war. Events scheduled for children include face painting, children relays and balloon arts.

Three teams will be awarded prizes according to their performances, and an award will be given to the most supportive team.

Officials from the Association for Migrant Workers’ Human Rights will hold a session on the proper use of industrial safety equipment.
