Progressive groups will host large-scale demonstrations in downtown Seoul on Saturday.
Some 15,000 members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) will gather at Seoul Plaza to call for the minimum wage to be raised to 10,000 won per hour and the abolition of non-regular working positions.
A nationwide association of farmers will host another rally at Marronnier Park in Daehangno, northeastern Seoul, where around 5,000 farmers will demand a government hearing into the police’s use of a water cannon which put a farmer in a coma at an earlier rally last November.
The participants of the two rallies will gather at Gwanghwamun Square in the evening to join another demonstration calling for an extension of the special committee’s investigation period for the Sewol ferry disaster. The investigation is set to end at the end of this month according to the related law, while the salvaging of the sunken ferry isn’t expected to be completed until the end of July.
