Multicultural students 'confused over identity'

One in four multicultural students in Korea suffers from identity confusion, a report shows.

The National Youth Policy Institute interviewed 1,334 children from multicultural families over five years from 2011, recording their change in awareness of nationality, multicultural acceptability and identity as Korean.

Asked what nationality they think they have, three in four, on average, said Korean. One out of four considers he or she has dual nationality or foreign nationality.

Their identity as Korean slightly diminished with age.

“Several factors -- middle school life and entry into puberty -- may have an influence on the students,” the institute said in the report, released Wednesday. “The government should provide policy meeting requests from multicultural adolescents while protecting the students against suffering from an identity crisis.”
