Incheon airport explosive suspect arrested

Listen

Police said Thursday they arrested a Korean man suspected of leaving a suspicious package, together with a threatening note in Arabic, at Incheon International Airport on Jan 29.

The suspect, identified only as “A” was a 36-year-old Korean national without a permanent job. He was arrested in Guro-gu, southwestern Seoul, Wednesday. “A” completed graduate school with a music major, but was struggling to find a job and confessed to being “discontented with society."

“A” also confessed to making the suspected explosive device at home out of butane canisters and planting it in a men's restroom at the airport. “A” took the apparatus into the restroom in a shopping bag, put it in place and left the airport in two minutes, heading to Seoul, according to police.

Inside the box were two butane canisters and a water bottle but no explosives or detonators. Guitar strings, electric cords, batteries and pieces of vegetables were also found in the box.

The message included in the device, printed in Arabic, said "This is the last warning to you." The sentence contained grammatical errors.
