President Park Geun-hye chided her senior secretary for political affairs for rejecting the opposition party's offer to send her an orchid as a gift for her birthday, an official said Tuesday.

Hyun Ki-hwan politely turned down the Minjoo Party's offer, believing that it was not appropriate to take the flower at a time when the rival parties have failed to pass a set of bills, presidential spokesman Jeong Yeon-guk told reporters.

A spokesman for the opposition party was on his way to deliver an orchid to Park's chief of staff Lee Byung-kee, Jeong said.

Park celebrated her 64th birthday by having lunch with her top aides earlier in the day. (Yonhap)
