Drunk driving causes one in seven car accident fatalities, figures show.

According to data from the Ministry of Public Safety and Security and the Road Traffic Authority, Monday, over the past five years 3,648 people died in accidents caused by drunk drivers.

This means an average of 730 people die in drunk-driving accidents every year.

This is 14 percent of 25,980 road-death victims in the past five years.

When the number of people injured in drunk driving accidents is included, casualties total 1,704,622.

This means an average of 136 people are injured or killed in accidents involving drunk driving everyday.

The accidents mainly happened on weekends _ Saturdays (18.1 percent) and Sundays (16 percent) accounted for more than a third of total accidents throughout the week.

With a host of alcohol-loaded gatherings certain to mark the end of the year, the government has launched a campaign to prevent drunk driving.
