Ahn Cheol-soo, former co-chairman of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) said Monday that he will create a new political party by February, which will carry out the fight for the young generation.
Ahn’s plans come amid swirling confusion within the opposition camp, wrought by Ahn’s departure earlier, on Dec. 13, from the NPAD over differences about party reform with the incumbent leadership of NPAD Chairman Moon Jae-in.
“I will achieve change in government leadership. I and the new party will fight for the young generation enraged by the injustices in society,” Ahn said in a press conference held in Seoul.
The former software mogul-turned-politician said that this new goal is the way for him to pay back the debt he owes to the supporters, the people and the members of the NPAD.
He ruled out coalition with the NPAD, but added that he is open to joining effort or hands with such independent lawmakers as Chun Jung-bae who are based in the opposition’s home turf of southwestern Jeolla provinces.
Ahn’s steps are expected to accelerate moves for coalitions as well as defections within the opposition as the nation heads to the April 13 general elections.
