Six universities will not receive government funding due to their poor management and academic environment, the Ministry of Education said Monday.
In the ministry’s evaluation of 163 four-year universities and 135 two-year vocational colleges nationwide, these schools were rated E, the lowest level.
“We decided to take the stern measure of ending financial support to universities getting E,” said Han Seog-soo, deputy minister for the university policies office.
The six schools are: Daegu University of Foreign Studies and Luther, Seonam, Seoul Christian, Shingyeong and Hanzhong universities.
The ministry will cut all kinds of financial support for scholarships and student loans.
The schools will also have to cease ongoing government-sponsored projects and will not able to take any projects from the government in the future.
They also must cut their enrollment by up to 15 percent and restructure their departments.
Seven vocational colleges will face the same sanction for thier E rating.
“We are trying to recommend all schools to autonomously reform themselves while suggesting they reduce enrollment by up to 15 percent as the number of students is decreasing,” Han said.
