The North Korean military has reportedly increased activities to counter the South’s broadcasting of propaganda along the Demilitarized Zone, reported the Yonhap News Agency.
“We are seeing more North Korean forces frequently opening loopholes along the Military Demarcation Line’s General Outposts,” a military official was quoted as saying in the report. This is regarded as evidence that the North is readying to target the South.
South Korea restarted broadcasting propaganda through loudspeakers on Aug. 10 in the border area for the first time in 11 years after confirming that the repressive state was responsible for landmine explosions that maimed two South Korean soldiers earlier this month.
The broadcasting is part of a psychological warfare program, delivering outside news to be heard by North Korean soldiers and border-area residents. Pyongyang has reacted sensitively in the past to such tactics, apparently concerned about the possible effect it might have on its people.
