71 percent of elementary school students to receive summer lessons

Seven out of 10 elementary school students are likely to receive some form of private education during the summer vacation, a survey showed Monday.

According to a Yoon's English School survey of 665 parents, 71.7 percent said they had such plans for their children.

The students are set to cost their parents an average of 392,000 won on private education during the summer. A total of 37.9 percent of the parents said they were willing to spend more than 400,000 won.

The most-sought courses were English lessons, followed by music/physical education (piano, swimming, taekwondo or basketball lessons) and math lessons.

Almost half (46.1 percent) the parents said they planned to add a new subject or increase lesson hours.

They expected their children to study an average of 2.1 hours longer and for themselves to spend an average of 204,000 won more.

Parents said the extra lessons or hours were "to improve grades on the subject" and "to try vacation programs such as English camps."

But at the same time, 89.1 percent said the extra lessons and hours would be a burden.
