Sadang Station tops sex offense list

Sadang Station, southern Seoul, had the highest number of reported sexual offenses last year, according to statistics a ruling party lawmaker presented at the National Assembly Tuesday.

A total 119 cases were reported, according to the presentation by Rep. Lee Noh-geun, of the Saenuri Party, to the National Assembly's Land and Transportation Committee, and confirmed by the National Police Agency and the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Most offenses happened on trains and in the station where lines No. 2 and 4 meet.

Seoul and Gangnam stations followed with 90 and 88 cases, respectively.

The report confirmed a total of 1,356 cases that included 725 reports of sexual harassment and 631 of camera filming.

This compares with 1,037 cases reported in 2013. There have been 272 cases in the first three months of this year.

Since 2012, line No. 2 has had the highest number of offenses reported _ 314 in 2012, 348 in 2013 and 457 in 2014.

Subway lines 4 and 7 followed, each recording 146 cases.

Lee demanded more safety patrol officers be deployed, particularly during the rush hours. He also wants surveillance cameras to deter offenders.

Most incidents (26.4 percent) happened between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. weekdays, with 296 cases.

Offenders were mostly in their 30s (330 people), followed by those in their 20s (304) and those in their 40s (174).

There were also 70 in their 50s, 31 in their 60s and 12 over 70.

More than 400 were office workers, 181 unemployed and 104 students.
