A policeman was caught driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) near the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae, police confirmed Sunday.

According to the Seoul Jongro district police, a chief superintendent with the National Police Agency surnamed Kang was indicted without detention at 4 a.m. on Sunday after being stopped near the Cheongun-dong district office, close to the presidential office.

Kang reportedly asked a police officer to provide a driver for his car, when the officer smelled alcohol, which he reported instantly.

The Jongro district office confirmed that Kang's blood alcohol concentration was 0.096 percent.

"This behavior is unacceptable under any circumstances, and Kang will face severe consequences after the suspension committee determines his punishment,” a National Police Agency spokesman said.
