A musical actor has been convicted of the attempted rape of a 17-year-old girl.

The Seoul Northern District Court sentenced the 35-year-old actor, surnamed Lee, to one year in prison suspended for two years.

The court also ordered Lee to complete a 40-hour mandatory sex education program for convicted sex offenders, and to do 160 hours of community service.

Lee was indicted last year on charges of attempting to rape a girl in an apartment hallway in Seongbuk-dong, northern Seoul.

According to court documents, Lee followed the victim to her home at 2 a.m. on Sept. 6, and tried to grab her arms. The victim strongly fought back and managed to flee the scene, and called the police.

Lee had prior conviction on a similar offence. In 2008, he was sentenced to three years for attempted rape suspended for four years.

Lee played the lead role in the popular musical “Singing in the Rain,” in 2014.
