At least one construction worker was killed and seven others injured ― one of them seriously ― at a road construction site in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, Wednesday.
They were among 16 workers trapped under debris after part of a bridge they were working on collapsed at 5:20 p.m.
All were pulled out immediately with eight injured workers being sent to a nearby hospital, the authorities said. However, one died in transit.
One of the other injured workers suffered heart failure, but was still alive as of 7:45 p.m.
Police said the exact cause of the accident is being investigated, and those responsible will be punished if any safety lapses are found.
Lotte Engineering and Construction has been in charge of the construction since the Korea Land and Housing Corporation placed an order for it in 2012 as part of a metropolitan transportation plan.
