A 19-year-old Marine died Tuesday from injuries hours after an accident at a military training camp in Pohang.
The trainee lost his hand when a hand grenade exploded at about 10:20 a.m.
He was taken to a hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead in the afternoon.
According to the military, another trainee and a drill sergeant were listed as being in stable condition.
About 500 recruits participated in the drill.
Military authorities are investigating the exact cause of the explosion, including the possibility of defects or a mistake made when handling the grenade.
The deceased entered the training camp on Aug. 25 and was supposed to complete the course on Oct. 9.
The incident is the latest in a series of fatal incidents that have occurred in the Korean military in recent months.
On Sept. 2, two staff sergeants of the Special Warfare Command, aged 21 and 23, died during a mock-kidnapping exercise in which they spent more than an hour on their knees with their hands tied behind their backs and hoods pulled over their faces.
