The issue concerning comfort women is highlighted around the world with Japan, which sits in the middle as the instigator, insisting that it is a thing of the past, if at all it occurred.
Adding more fuel to the debate and arguments has been a recent remark by Kasuto Momii, the incoming chairman of NHK, Japan’s leading broadcaster.
In his inaugural address in Tokyo Sunday, Momii said comfort women existed everywhere around the world, especially during war time.
The new NHK chairman said, “The reality existed in all countries involved in World War II,” making references to Korean comfort women who provided forced sexual services to Japanese soldiers.
“From a moral point of view, particularly judging the situation now, there could be questions and allegations of wrongdoing.
“However, the continued accusations that Japan was the only country to do so are making the issue much more complex.”
Momii also mentioned that as an international broadcasting company, he will make concerted efforts to resolve territorial disputes involving South Korea and China.
