Listen

Passengers flee from the Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 which crashed during landing at the San Francisco International Airport Saturday.

An Asiana Airlines passenger jet carrying 300 people crashed during landing at San Francisco International Airport, U.S. civil aviation authorities said Saturday.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the wide-body Boeing 777 crash occurred at around 11:20 a.m. local time. Authorities here said the crash involved Asiana flight 214 from Seoul to San Francisco and that the accident caused operations at the airport to be suspended. The FAA said the ill-fated plane may have collided with something after it had landed on the runway.

It was not immediately known if anyone was injured in incident, although local media showed video clips on YouTube of the plane's emergency evacuation chutes being deployed and people fleeing the wreckage. Images showed smoke coming from the wreckage and considerable damage to the plane's structure including the wings and tail section. Fires on board following the crash were contained.

A passenger on the jet said despite the crash, most people on board seemed to be alright, and news reports here said the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched an investigative team to determine the caused of the crash.
