Traffic regulation enforcement increased while traffic accidents decreased within a year in Gyeonggi-do.

According to the Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency, traffic law enforcement cases from January to May reached 189,000 compared to last year’s 97,000.

The cases include 142,000 law violations, 24,000 disorderly driving conducts, 20,000 school zone violations, and 810 children traffic commuting violations.

School zone regulations have especially been enforced 160 fold from 95 cases in January to May of last year to 20,000 cases this year.

To eradicate school violence related to the “4 Evils (sexual violence, school violence, domestic violence, and unsanitary food)” and protect children, school zone regulations have been strongly enforced, explains the police.

Police will install or replace 3,452 traffic safety facilities and repair and fortify 6,913 other facilities within the 1,216 elementary school neighborhoods in the province.

Due to renewed resolve on enforcement, traffic accidents have sharply decreased.

For the first half of this year, 999 (4.7 percent) traffic accidents in the Gyeonggi area have been reduced from 21,401 to 20,402 since last year.

Pedestrian deaths and injuries were reduced from 525 to 456 and 33,639 to 31,127 respectively.

A police official said, “We are strongly enforcing traffic laws and reduced the number of traffic accidents. For the safety of children in the school zone, we have coordinated with the local government and are supplementing safety facilities and increasing patrols.”
