Elder abuse rampant in aging society

Listen

Elder abuse is rampant in this aging society, study showed Tuesday.

Some 9,340 cases were reported, 3,424 among them confirmed and identified.

The cases increased by 8.6 percent from a year earlier, according to the report by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Children in their 60s or older abused their parents, the result showed.

Emotional abuse topped the chart marking at 38.3 percent, followed by physical ones, 23.8 percent.

Financial ones and abandonment were also the causes.

Some elders gave up and let themselves die, and those cases doubled from a year earlier.

To deal with the situation, the ministry will open centers for the elderly, and will provide them with financial support.

It also plans to create 50,000 jobs for them.

“Poverty triggers abuse. We will try to help them stand on their own feet,” said an official from the ministry.
