The government will disclose the residential addresses of convicted sex offenders from next month.
Under the current law, citizens can find whether convicted sex offenders live in their residential district from a website (www.sexoffender.go.kr). This provides information on how many sex offenders stay in particular districts without detailing where exactly they live and who they are.
From June, the government will also make public the buildings where convicted sex offenders live.
It will also provide detailed information regarding crimes committed and which individuals wear electronic anklets. Citizens can access this information on mobile devices.
The government will also expand the list of people and institutions that receive information on sex offenders. Currently households, schools, kindergartens and childcare centers receive this, but from June, “hagwon” or private institutions, community childcare centers and youth training centers will also be informed.
Cabinet ministers approved the measures on Tuesday.
